Trauma-Informed or Not? Rethinking Our Patient Care
Laurie Charles, DNP, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, CHSE, AFN-C, IVSE-C, DF-AFN
Join the Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing for a free webinar on integrating person-centered, trauma-informed and culturally aware approaches to health care practice.
Many health care professionals recognize the importance of trauma-informed care (TIC), yet few feel fully competent in applying it. Research shows gaps in knowledge and confidence that can impact patient safety, trust and healing. Without training, language choices by providers may retraumatize patients or create barriers to disclosure. In addition, culture, racism, and historical and systemic inequities further complicate patient interactions and outcomes.
This session will provide strategies for delivering care that is both trauma-informed and culturally aware, ensuring providers can respond appropriately to trauma, avoid retraumatization and foster patient-centered communication. Participants will recall person-first, trauma-informed health care practices, compare how language choices affect patient outcomes, identify culturally aware approaches to patient care, and apply guidance from the Texas Evidence Collection Protocol to strengthen their healthcare response.
Consent in the Military Setting
Vangie Barefoot, MSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P
Join the Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing for a free webinar exploring the unique consent requirements for Sexual Assault Forensic Exams (SAFEs) involving service members. Civilian Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) and hospitals often have limited knowledge of military protocols, which can create confusion when caring for active-duty patients.
This session will provide clarity on how consent is defined and applied under military law, as well as how it differs from civilian procedures. Participants will learn about the consent process used in military treatment facilities and how civilian providers can align their practice to meet military expectations and legal standards.
