Returning to the Sacred Path: Transcending Trauma through Cultural Safety, Nursing and Healthcare
Jennifer S. Nanez, MSW, LCSW
Join us for a free webinar focused on understanding historical trauma and advancing culturally safe care for American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations.
AI/AN individuals represent a small percentage of the national nursing workforce, and many receive care outside of the Indian Health Service in systems that may not reflect their cultural needs or lived experiences. As a result, gaps in knowledge about AI/AN history, historical trauma, and culturally informed care can contribute to disparities in health outcomes.
Many health care providers may not fully recognize how historical trauma, shaped by generations of systemic and structural inequities, continues to influence health behaviors, trust, and engagement in care. Without this understanding, providers may struggle to deliver responsive, respectful, and bias-free care.
This session will explore the collective and ongoing impact of historical trauma and examine how culturally safe, trauma-informed approaches can improve care delivery. Participants will gain insight into structural determinants of health, institutional inequities and the importance of self-awareness in providing equitable, patient-centered care.
Missing & Murdered Indigenous People: Insights from the Transit Cooperative Research Program Planning, & National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
Aaron A. Payment, EdD
Join us for a free webinar focused on improving the cross-system response to Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP).
Professionals across health care, law enforcement and community systems often work within fragmented frameworks where MMIP data is inconsistent, underreported or difficult to interpret. Many practitioners lack familiarity with federal guidance, including Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) consultation prompts, and have limited awareness of investigative resources such as the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). In addition, transportation-related safety planning strategies that support early detection and prevention are often underutilized.
This session will explore how federal guidance, data systems, investigative tools and safety-focused planning intersect in MMIP response. Participants will gain practical insight into how to interpret MMIP-related data, apply available federal resources and strengthen coordination across agencies to support earlier identification of risk and more consistent intervention.
The webinar will also examine how historical and intergenerational trauma, along with federal Indian policy, continue to influence data collection, identity reporting and access to services. Understanding these factors is critical to improving outcomes and ensuring equitable, culturally informed responses.
