Advanced Forensic Nursing Skills Lab
Course Description
This course provides education on interacting with patients who have experienced complex sexual assault. Participant will build on the foundations learned in the Person-Centered Adult Sexual Assault Simulation (a required prerequisite) by experiencing three case scenarios:
- An individual who has been sexually assaulted while incarcerated
- A patient who does not wish to report the sexual assault to law enforcement
- A patient who experienced polyvictimization through human trafficking
In addition, attendees will conduct multiple simulated sexual assault examinations with evidence collection.
Learning Outcome(s)
The SANE will successfully complete a simulated sexual assault medical forensic examination utilizing trauma-informed care practices, anogenital assessment, and evidence collection on a non-report patient, a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) patient, and a human trafficking patient with a return demonstration.
- Objective one: Demonstrate trauma-informed care practices.
- Objective two: Utilize trauma-informed language in simulated medical forensic history gathering.
- Objective three: Integrate effective communication skills for patient safety planning, mandatory reporting, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
- Objective four: Adapt clinical treatment plan to individualized patient needs.
Content Warning
The content in this course necessarily discusses the sexual assault of people, which may be emotionally and intellectually challenging. We do our best to make this course a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with potentially difficult content. This course includes realistic portrayals of patients who have experienced sexual assault and may be triggering for some.
We use moulage (specialized make-up techniques) to simulate injuries and abuse, in our standardized patient (SP) scenarios. These depictions can be intense and potentially triggering for some individuals. If at any point during the simulation you feel uncomfortable or experience difficulty, please don't hesitate to notify a staff member or coach. Your well-being is our priority, and we are here to support you.
