SAFE Education: Pediatrics

Course Description

This course provides the foundation for practicing as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner for the pediatric population who has experienced sexual assault. The subject matter includes aspects of culturally appropriate and responsive care for the American Indian/Alaska Native pediatric patient populations impacted by violent crimes (e.g., sexual abuse, domestic and intimate partner violence, strangulation, human trafficking, etc.). This course adheres to the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Education Guidelines. 

Learning Outcome(s)

85% of learners will self-report an increase in knowledge and skill in the provision of trauma-informed, victim-centered care to the adult/adolescent population experiencing sexual assault and/or abuse.

Content Warning

The content in this course necessarily discusses the sexual assault of people, which may be emotionally and intellectually challenging. We do our best to make this course a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with difficult content. This course includes realistic portrayals of patients that have experienced sexual assault and may be triggering for some.

Delivery Modality

This self-paced course is delivered completely online.

Prerequisite

Learners must be an RN, APRN, MD, or DO. To be eligible for certifications, RNs and APRNs must have a minimum of two years experience as a nurse.

Cancellation, Refunds, and Transfers

Cancellation of Course

In the event Texas A&M University cancels a course, or there is a weather or disaster event, a full refund will be provided to all learners.

Refunds

If the refund request is received more than 14 days before the scheduled course/simulation, the participant will receive a 50% refund of their fees.

Refunds will not be issued if the request is received less than 14 days before the scheduled course/simulation.

Transfers – No Refund

If learners are unable to complete or attend a course, registration will be allowed to be transferred, one (1) time as a courtesy to the same course at a future date. To request transfer to a future instance of the same course, please email Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing at forensicnursing@tamu.edu no later than 14 days prior to the start time of the originally scheduled course. Afterwards, no transfers will be made. Emergencies will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

The Texas A&M University College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Medicine
The Texas A&M University College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Participants must attend the entire event and/or fully participate in the course to receive continuing education credit.
