Course Description
The Interpersonal Violence Examiner Course addresses critical gaps in education for health care professionals who care for individuals affected by interpersonal violence. Despite the high prevalence of interpersonal violence, many providers lack formal training in patient-centered communication, trauma-informed care, forensic assessment and evidence collection.
This online, self-paced course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based foundation in forensic nursing practice, including culturally responsive care, trauma-informed assessment, legal considerations and interdisciplinary collaboration. Content includes case studies, reflection activities and applied scenarios designed to strengthen clinical judgment and improve outcomes for patients and communities.
Learning Outcomes
The learner will complete the Interpersonal Violence Examiner Course by applying trauma-informed, culturally responsive and evidence-based practices to recognize, assess and respond to interpersonal violence across the lifespan.
Objectives:
- Distinguish between the various forms of interpersonal violence.
- Adapt the medical forensic examination to meet the unique needs of patients experiencing interpersonal violence throughout the lifespan.
- Identify available resources for individuals experiencing interpersonal violence.
- Examine methods for determining the level of danger in a relationship.
- Select appropriate evidence collection techniques for patients experiencing interpersonal violence throughout the lifespan.
- Explain the criminal justice process in interpersonal violence cases.
Content Warning
This course includes discussion of interpersonal violence, sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, strangulation, pregnancy-related violence, substance use, historical trauma and other topics that may be distressing to some learners.
Learners are encouraged to prioritize their well-being while engaging with the course content and seek support if needed.

Cancellation of Course
In the event Texas A&M University cancels a course, a full refund will be issued to all learners.
Refunds
If a refund request is received more than 14 days before the scheduled course, the participant will receive a 50% refund of the course fees.
Refunds will not be issued if the request is received less than 14 days before the scheduled course.
Transfers, No Refund
If learners are unable to complete or attend a course, registration may be transferred one time as a courtesy to the same course at a future date.
To request a transfer to a future instance of the same course, please email the Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing at forensicnursing@tamu.edu no later than 14 days before the start of the originally scheduled course.
Transfer requests submitted after that date will not be approved. Emergencies will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

IHS Transfer Policy
If learners are unable to attend a course before it begins, they may request to transfer their registration to a future instance of the same course.
To request a transfer, please email the Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing at forensicnursing@tamu.edu no later than 14 days before the original course start date.
If learners are already enrolled and unable to complete the course, they may request a transfer to a future instance of the same course. Requests should be submitted as soon as possible to allow for scheduling adjustments.
Emergencies will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us as soon as possible.
